From a photo club to a global community.

Umuzi was founded in 2008 by three friends from corporate South Africa, wanting to create change beyond boardrooms. In 2009, they started the Umuzi Photo Club, using photography to amplify young voices in informal settlements.

From art to industry

In these early years, we learned something important: while creative expression was powerful, photography alone wasn’t leading to sustainable livelihoods.

2009 - 2014

Photo Club hosted events including
  • 32 workshops in 6 townships across 3 provinces
  • 30 local + 5 international exhibitions
  • Over 100 young creatives reached

2014

First Accredited Qualification
  • Launched our first accredited programme in graphic design and photography with 50 young creatives
  • Investec came on board as our first founding employer partner

2015

Expanding Creative Pathways
  • Introduced a copywriting qualification
  • Built a Creative Industry talent pipeline

2017

From Art to Tech
  • Added Design Thinking and Agile to the curriculum
  • Expanded into the Tech Industry with coding and web development programmes

2019

Scaling Skills
  • Launched data science and fast-track coding programmes.

2020

Radical Adaptation
  • COVID disrupted in-person learning
  • Shifted fully to remote learning, creating a bridge to a global future

2021–2022

Growing Partnerships
  • Scaled South African operations
  • Began global partnerships, including UNICEF

2023–2024

Global Impact
  • Launched programmes with global partners, including SAP
  • Expanded reach across continents and deepened global impact

2025-2026

Pathways for a Changing World
  • Expanded beyond digital to offer high-impact pathways in green innovation, tourism, agriculture, and care
  • Consolidated our methodology into three integrated Labs: Skills, Experience, and Launch strengthening learner journeys at every entry point
  • Deepened commitment to building future-fit talent pipelines that respond to emerging global needs
